Project Information:
In 2017, the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast awarded a nearly $36 million contract to Hensel Phelps Construction Company for the construction of a Triton Forward Operating Base (FOB) Hangar at Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, Florida.
Naval Station Mayport's selection was the first basing site of the Triton program, which will be used to establish and meet threshold requirements for Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for the Triton Unmanned Aircraft System. IOC is defined as one base unit with sufficient assets, technical data, training systems, and enough spares and support equipment to operationally support one persistent orbit.
The project called for the design and construction of a multi-story, steel-framed, concrete masonry aircraft maintenance hangar, storage facility and aircraft apron to accommodate the Triton program FOB requirements. Built-in equipment included power service points, an aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) fire suppression system, a five-ton overhead bridge crane, passenger elevator, emergency generator, aircraft cooling units, power units, compressed air system and wash racks.
ParkUSA's Solution:
ParkUSA has many years of experience with airport infrastructure and hangars; Therefore, ParkUSA was contacted to design and manufacture the ParkUSA FoamTrooper AFFF Containment system to meet project requirements (see Figure 1).
ParkUSA’s FoamTrooper® is designed to divert wastewater from the hangar to a holding tank in the event of an AFFF discharge. The system contained the following components:
• Diversion Valve Vault System;
• AFFF Holding Tank;
• Vent Drain Vault;
• Oil Water Separator;
• Sample Well;
• System Control Panel; and
• Trench Drain.
To ensure functionality of the design, ParkUSA’s in house engineering team collaborated with the project engineer to design and develop the appropriate elevations and sizing of all system components. In addition, to increase performance and reliability of the overall system, ParkUSA’s engineering team developed controls to monitor conditions in the AFFF holding tank and the oil water separator. Ultimately, ParkUSA’s Foamtrooper® system met all project requirements for Naval Station Mayport.
